Johannes Itten - 'The Elements of Colour'

This book was a really interesting and eye opening read. The book heavily focussed on the elements of colour that one should think about in design.  Through the scientific elements of how colour is perceived in our eyes through light, to the ways artists used colour in their work the book really helped me gain a better understanding of the power of colour through design, and how it can be used to create high quality design work.

Notes taken:

  •  Itten was considered of the greatest teachers of the art of colour of modern times.
  • Studied under Adolf Hölzer - leading german colour theorist
  • he saw relation in colour and music
  • gave early attention to abstract colour expression, and geometric paintings.
  • Francesca (1410-1492) painted individual in shape outline and balanced with complimentary colours.
  • Leonardo (1452 - 1519) rejected strong colouration
  • Picasso used colour for their light and dark values.
  • Impression (visually)
  • Expression (emotionally)
  • Construction (symbolically)
  • if you shone green light on red paper it will bring a block colour, because the green light contains no red to be reflected.
  • two or more colours are mutually harmonious is their mixture yields a neutral gray.

The seven kinds of colour contrast are the following:
- Contrast of hue
- Light-dark contrast
- Cold-warm contrast
- Complementary contrast
- Simultaneous contrast
- Contrast of saturation
- Contrast of extension.
