SB1 - Symbolism

Initial sketches above show the symbolism that relates to Bhangra, this could be through the use of instruments and clothing worn during Bhnagra dances.

  •  Harvest - Bhangra derives from the celebration of harvest, the symbolism for this could be a circle comprised of arrows relating to the process of Harvest. It also hints at the choreography to which harvest is traditionally celbrated through dance. Icons could link to the growths of harvest and the dan routine.
  • Religion - the two prominent religions that relate to Bhangra is that of Sikhism and Islamic faith, this could be easily identifies and symbolised through the religious symbols.
  • A cassette - This links to the success of Bhangra in Britain and the way thats it sold 30,000 cassettes in a week, yet never made it to the UK Charts.
  • Hemp Leaf - The word Bhangra derives from the word Bhang (translates to Hemp), the use of hemp is used in celebration and turned into drinks
  • Indian and Pakistan Flag - represents the origin of Bhangra
  • Arrow - represents the journey of Bhangra from Punjab to Birmingham
  • Tabla - Instrument used in Bhangra Music
