Group Crit and Development

After experimenting with Artist responses of DAIN and DeltaInc, the DeltaInc design was suggested by peers to be further developed and pushed forward. They went on to agree how the idea of incorporating the map of Leeds into the design proved successful and make the overall design both appealing to the public who will use and not use the wayfinding system. However,  The idea of having the super graphic shown over the whole wall brought a problematic discovery. Although the supergraphic covering a whole wall would prove easy to find, the change in slanted positions makes it difficult for the public to distinguish which way to go, as it depends on the direction to which they approach it.

To further develop, I looked back on research based on Frutiger, which explains how a triangle on its side offers a clear sense of direction through the way in which the apex of the triangle it pointing. So to further improve the sense of direction and to resolve the problem with the super graphic design, the supergraphic was developed into shapes. The shapes were to include a base line and an apex to help distinguish a sense of direction. This was then further developed through sketching ideas by linking the shapes with a think black line. The overall look with the black line adds to the form of direction and forms a path for the public’s eyes to follow. The design Idea could be placed separately on buildings, or could have a continuous black line joining the whole wayfinding system together. The idea of having a continuous line proved difficult to decide as a successful or unsuccessful idea from peers, however through personal choice, the idea of a continuous line was removed, as relating back to the DAIN design approach, the wayfinding system isn’t effective for all of the public in Leeds, and also it will involve taking over pavements and possibly roads which could disrupt normal pedestrian and road signs. Through a critique of the development, the idea of further incorporating the community through the supergraphic design was made, this could be achieved by using a mirrors. The mirrors could replace the negative space of the design, which would then reflect the public and surroundings, incorporating them into the design.
