Initial Ideas and Crit Feedback

The Brief:

In this studio brief we want you to focus on this subjective nature. We want you to design a personal sign system in your own interpretation of the spaces around you. We expect to see poetic signs, imaginary sign systems, conflicting sign systems, etc.

The Idea

When looking around Leeds, one thing really sticks out and inspires and engages me, the graffiti. Inspired by graffiti artists such as Banksy, Shepard Fairey and DAIN, I have always wanted to locate a legal graffiti wall and create some of my own art work. This fascination from street art formed my initial Idea, a wayfinding system to legal graffiti walls. This wayfinding idea, will not only guide people where to do street art, but help decrease the level of vandalism in Leeds. The wayfinding system could be a form of graffiti art itself linking to the geometric enlightenment piece created in the Objective to Subjective task.

The Crit

When explaining my idea to my peers in our crit session, the overall reaction to the idea was positive. Idea's of how to locate the where legal graffiti walls were, were shared (ecosystem.org) and I was suggested to look at graffiti vocab, as it could be used to relate to the target audience. Personally, although the idea was somewhat comical, I believe by having the wayfinding system as something just visual, the system will look less like any other form of graffiti writing found throughout Leeds. To develop my ideas I will look into some Artists/ Designers to form stronger design approaches to this task.

Whilst searching for the legal walls of Graffiti throguh the ecosystem.org site suggested to me during the crit, I came across a website called legawalls.net, this site is very reliable as it continuously updates everyday to make sure that you know when which walls have been deemed illegal.
