Born in New Jersey in 1937, Lance Wyman is a graphic designer best known for pictogram designs for the Mexican Metro Station.
Sharing similarities to Aicher, Wyman was given the challenge to create a collection of icons/pictograms that used a universal language, Wyman had to consider those with poor literacy skills and tourists who do not read, or speak Spanish, this ruled out the use of text in his approach. To further develop his work, Wyman decided to create pictograms that depicted each station in the metro line, from unique buildings located near to the stations or contextual meaning (e.g. La Candelaria translated to the 'District of Ducks'; district populated with criminals), Wyman was able to distinguish a design for each station with its own unique and identifiable symbol.
Again like Aicher, Wyman used colour to further develop his pictograms and distinguish which like the stop was on in the metro system, and if the pictogram were to consist of more than one colour that meant the station stop was at an intersection.
Overall Wymans approach was extremely interesting, and will help generate many ideas If I were to develop pictograms for my final outcome for this brief.
