Brief 2 - Research on Müeller Brockman

When deciding on what typefaces to choose for my two rationales I wanted to got for a typeface that connotes a form of rebellion. The theme of rebellion ties in really well with the word static, because the adjective and noun both juxtapose each other so well, and the ways in which I could approach static involves deforming the typeface, which means the design won't conform to its original form. A sans serif typeface would be more suitable for the chosen typeface, as a characterless, simplistic design would be easier to experiment with and keep legibility at the same time. With a serif typeface when deconstructing, the typeface could become cluttered and too hectic for the final outcome, overall making it hard to read and not work with other lettering harmoniously when used. 

Berthold (Akzidenz Grotesk)


Berthold (Akzidenz Grotesk), is a sans-serif  typeface produced in 1898, which was originally released by the Berthold Type Foundry in Berlin. Because of it's cool form the typeface was used for industrial advertising. Although Berthold was released in 1898, it was a heavy influence on Dutch and Swiss design during the 1950s and 60s. Becoming the starting point for both Univers and Helvetica. Being a typeface which became the starting point for both typefaces, they share very similar characteristics in shape and weight. This typeface would be great to use for my typeface, its simplicity and uncharacteristic design opens wider possibility of experimenting with its form. 

Clarendon

Clarendon is a typeface that first appeared in 1815 in Figgins Type Foundry. Clarendon is based of the Egyptian typeface and is notable for its strong horizontal connecting lines which contrasts very little with the main strokes. 
Although stating that using a serif typeface would be difficult, I really liked the idea of using Clarendon for its contextual value. Being a typeface that was used for Wanted posters in America, I thought this could add context the the typeface being rebellious. I could eve experimenting with removing or resizing the serifs on the letters to create less of a hectic overall look.
