DEVELOPMENT
Through organising critiques and discussing the design idea with peers of the class, the design Idea to create the delivery box was well received and understood. Peers went on to explain how the idea was clever in the way that it manipulated with the delivery box, and allowed them to identify the origin of the genre quickly. It sparked a discussion, which is what helped identify this outcome would be more successful than previous design ideas.
The imagery used on the box encapsulates all that makes Bhangra the genre it is. Through initial research, vector designs were created to manipulate known delivery symbols. The symbols designed hints at the origins of Bhangra being from Harvest celebrations dance routines (circular arrows), and it’s name from the word ‘Bhang’ (cannabis leaf). Imagery depicting a Sikh man among the British community was used to highlight the migration Asians to Birmingham.
To make the outcome’s culture more identifiable, Punjabi phonetics were incorporated into the development of the box design to link clearly to Bhangras origins. The phonetics spell out ‘East to West’ to symbolise the migration of both the music and culture. As the box will hypothetically carry ‘Bhangra’, the music genres name is labelled onto the box in punjabi. The use of colour for this design was kept to a minimum, the primary use of colour was black, to share a more relatable look to a delivery box. The use of orange was developed to bring depth and focus to the imagery used on the box, and symbolise the energy of warmth of Punjab and Bhangra.
The use of a postage label was developed to allow viewers to easily distinguish what the box represents. Along with the type on the label, it mentions the origin of bhangra and where it was ‘delivered to’. The manipulated ‘This way up’ symbol was used to further reiterate and play around with the delivery box metaphor and stylise the outcome. To develop the outcome further, the use of a QR code was created, this QR code further links to templates of delivery labels, but also allows the viewer to interact with the final outcome and view the ‘content’ of the box.
