SB2 - Research

Here are notes that I have taken and collected from sites and articles, this was collected and annotated in my Sketch Book:

- Bleaching your skin is contrary to what skin does:
skin is designed to allow your Melanocyle cells create the right amount of pigment for your skin.

- Over the counter bleach product removes over pigmentation not the whole skin colour

- Skin bleaching revolves around social rand and privilege, and seen as a symbol of beauty.

- Historic representations go back to Geishas painted with white skin, chinese used to swallow ground pearls.

- Lighter complexions seen as being more glamorous and desirable.

- Asian beauty sites and ads display phrases such as 'skin flawlessly milky skin is to die for"

WHY DO PEOPLE DO IT?
- Remove facial blemishes
-follow a popular fad
- Faces look 'cool'
- To feel good.

'Fair and Lovely' - a bleaching products name.

COLOURISM - the attitude towards
 how fairer skin is better

- Skin bleaching products is a multibillion dollar industry.
- white is beautiful
- Hydroquinone is illegal in Africa
- 70% of women in Africa use skin bleaching products
- could be a sharp uptick in skin cancer to
- people are deemed lucky having darker skin
- "if you find 10 men only two will say that you are attractive"
- "When her mother gave her a black Barbie Doll, she remembers crying that 'i want a white one'"
- Animated film called black barbie
