SB2 - Initial Idea Barbie

One of the chosen initial ideas was inspired heavily from Barbie. Barbie was faced with a backlash and  many arguments which revolved around the unhealthy body image that the doll portrays to the younger generation, which led to a series of more realistically shaped Barbies being released. This made me realise and remember that a Barbie doll at a young age identifies the social views of beauty.

With the change and modification of Barbies now, it helped identify that there is a conversation about the impact Barbie dolls have on the younger generation, and that someone would then go on to point out that parents are worried to the messages portrayed about beauty through these doll. So an idea that I came up with was to create a slap-stick and dark humoured outcome which hypothetically would be a Barbie doll that encourages the child to 'bleach' the dolls skin tone to the shade it likes. This would be a controversial outcome (reached the goal of the set brief)and would hopefully spark a conversation. The piece would sarcastically have phrases such as 'make her lighter to get her the job of her dreams' - which challenges and relates to one of their recent campaigns 'if you can dream it you can be it'. The outcomes idea is to highlight the fact that whats mentioned on the box is extremely disrespectful - something you wouldn't tell your kids ; leading one to question why it is actually a real thing for adults in real life.

The outcome would potentially be an ad campaign such as one shown above, and then the possibly have a real barbie box made.
