Brief 2 - David Carson

David Carson, the man known to break the rules of typography helped inspire and shape the approach to this design brief. Legibility was always a concern when creating work for this brief, however Carson taught me not to not "mistake legibility for communication". When mentioning that the typeface would work really well as a graphic agitation or social/political art, the style of which this idea formed was through the style of Carsons work shown above. Something illegible and hard to read becomes intriguing, making one want to further investigate into what's actually being written, this is the hoped for response audience members will have towards the final typeface of this Brief. Watching Carson's TED talk 'Design and discovery'  and his clip in the 'Helvetica' documentary helped gain a better understanding behind his approach and mindset of design. In the TED talk Carson brushes on the topics of the Age of Design and the importance and impact typography has when forming a meaning.

To further develop my understanding of David Carson, I will read into Carson's views on legibility and how it cannot not communicate.
