Brief 2 - Developed Sketches

When creating initial ideas, the theme of static sudden movement and fragmentation was taken into account, looking at the structure and texture of the typeface.

These typefaces focussed on the structure of the Berthold and trying to confine it's simplistic and uncharacteristic form, however adding a texture and pattern incorporated from the group drawing activity. The N and S circled on left image proved interesting, easy to read and link really well to my rationale. The design is fragmented and nudged apart creating repelling movement.

Looking further into the form of TV Static and glitchy screens creating rough sketches of the layout of the glitches proved rather interesting, dissecting then simplifying the pattern allowed me to acknowledge the many layers that are formed - which could be further developed into typeface designs. The two A designs follow the same reasoning, a design that connotes the pixels of a static television, although the design works really well and clearly shows a link to the rationale - future thinking makes me wonder whether this typeface will function well. Referring back to the Brief  the typeface must be able to work together in endless combinations in a harmonious,
consistent sequence. With such a complex design and form of fragmentation the typeface would be really hard to use in a body of text alongside other letters.

Rough sketch ideas approaching the idea of incorporating textures into the typeface.

The incomplete typeface connotes the nature of Static electricity, the sudden on and off motion of movement is represented in the ways the typeface cut off and parts of each letter. The design is rather confident in responding to the rationale along with being able to functional and legible in a body of text. To further develop this typeface, I will create it digitally using Berthold to see if the typeface is still legible to read.

Further development of the circled designs of N and S on my first initial sketches. The overall look works really well to relate to the rationale. The slopping of the cut up lettering mimics the movement of static on the TV when the image is distorted. Like the sketch above, I will further develop this typeface by digitally creating it using Berthold and using the knife tool in illustrator to create clear sharp lines.
