From collecting photos from her room I was able to sketch up the design layout of her bedroom and begin to see where I could out certain symbolism and design ideas into the EP design.
A more detailed sketch of the initial idea, showing how the mood will be set, the sun shining through - there would be warm velvety colours used to match with the tone of her voice and her music. The design would portray her room through illustration and show forms of the symbolism in physical outcomes. Examples shown being a poster of the first for black lives matter.
*After showing amahla, she decided that she didn't want the design to be based in her room anymore but in Ridley Road Market
I played around with three design idea approaches for the EP - these initial ideas were just to show the design approach, so mainly the feel and style that will be approached so the outcomes were very rough.
Initial Design Idea 1
This design approach was looking at representing what amahla stands for and how it makes her her, so the symbols will make her portrait. The design would have layers split into dark to light to form contours of her face and form her portrait picture. The colours schemes chosen were not the final approaches but just initial rough ideas to how colour can be implemented.
"I like the message you are going for in this design,
and it is striking. But it's too literal in it's manifestation.
It loses subtly and as a consequence boxes be into the
'political artist; type lane which is something I don't want."
Initial Design Idea 2
This design approach uses imagery for Ridley Road Market to create a setting that links to amahla and also has elements of her ideologies hidden away into the photos. Through photoshop I have edited and erased all company names and logos - these were replaced with statements or images that link the subject themes that she wants to be used in her EP design.
"I like this design. This feels like
it could be more of a back cover design for the EP".
Initial Design Idea 3
This design looks at a more simpler and refined approach to match in parallel with her music style and tone. This would be a more controlled design approach offering a more refined aesthetic.
*** The second design was shown to my group crit, where they expressed how they felt that the outcome is a creative and intriguing way of displaying the different elements.
Sent more design collage inspired ideas to amahla to help whittle down a design approach she wanted. This process helped further discuss what she envisioned for this EP. She was drawn to the designs that used more portraiture imagery. These designs vary from setting or portrait based designs, something that hasn't been sorted yet.
Ridley market closed down permanently which resulted in me not being able to take my own primary imagery for the back EP design. I found and sourced and image of Ridley Road Market from a small news article that had no copyright over the image. This image was used for the initial design ideas and now has been agreed as a perfect image to use for the final submission of work.
I developed the back EP design by removing the sun and forming a calmer toned background for potential type to be placed on top of.
Initial sketches and ideas noted look at ways Amahla’s room could be the setting of the EP, representing her and what matters to her in a really simplistic but clever way.
The rough initial digital design ideas were created encompassing elements around Amahla, or through her. The design approaches were created to explore the ways in which the themes could be represented on the EP without being too obvious and having the viewer looking deeper into the design.
The strongest initial concept was having the Ridley Road Market as the setting, and having elements around the photo photoshopped out and replaced with the chosen themes - also removing any illegal usage of company logos in the photo.
