SB7 - Research

Research consisted of looking into the meaning behind the song, which resulted in identifying the two key possible interpretations behind the song. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand and the heartbreak of a one night stand fuelled by alcohol. Both interpretations are completely different but share the themes of love and loss. The lyric analysis helped form a stronger understanding for the song and also helped generate aspects that could be used for initial concepts.

The video, directed by Jonas Odell in 2004 positions the band in the midst of a Dadaist animation. Involving quirky vintage figures and machinery reminiscent of Terry Gilliam's cartoon segments in the Monty Python. I took key aspects of the video that I thought would work really well as an EP that doesn't directly show any lyrics titles or band names. This style will be further explored through the brief. This heavy expression of Dadaism in the EP and video highlight how Dadaism was something the band wanted to express and enjoyed doing - I will research into dadaism with two books:
