SB4 PROPER-GANDER - PROJECT EVALUATION
This brief was one of my favourites out of the briefs, it was an amazing experience to meet and get to know students from Boston, and the process of collaborating with them was really insightful. It was a very hands on brief from the get go - to produce something in the space of 3 days to present seems really daunting, but we were able to work together really well and create an outcome that I think was really amazing for the time we had. Working with both Illustration and Graphic Design students was really great as well, seeing how we can merge our skills together and work effectively as a team.
I worked really well with Carlos who was from MassArts, we both worked together on the overall look and layout of the magazine, bouncing ideas off of each other and making design decisions together. Both Carlos and I took on the the bulk of the project, setting up the editorial, getting it printed and designing the vinyl stickers. I also took on the project of designing and printing the front cover, and spray painting the inside jacket. We did have trouble with one of the MassArts students who wasn’t working cohesively with the group, making excuses to leave (not do work) and designing work of their own that wouldn’t be used in the Magazine - however we were able to talk about a clear vision of what illustrations we wanted from her and she delivered.
The overall experience was a really great way to show how much you can get done if you really put you mind into something. The team work was a great exercise in learning not to take on everything and working cohesively as a team to form the final outcome in time. I really enjoyed meeting Carlos, creating the concept together and learning new skills from him with type and composition layouts.
Carlos’ essay on his experience at Leeds Arts University:
“what really impressed me was how well me and Ami worked together. It was as though our brains were connected. While we waited for the other three to come back with the content Ami and I began to throw ideas around and how we would print the publication and how we could use material and unconventional techniques to heighten the experience of our publication and it was a collaborative rush.”
