OUGD603 - Statement of Intent

Throughout this module I want to be able explore and experiment with different design styles and techniques. I identify myself as a multidisciplinary designer, forever learning and experimenting with different forms and methods of design; digital, analogue, motion and interactive. I like to push myself to explore different ways of approaching projects, but still sticking to the brief and having justification for each and every design direction I make. The key purpose for me when I design is to create something with a a justified meaning, from the colour, stock or image, each element has a key purpose - purpose driven design that is more than just face value.

I want to be able to work on live commission briefs for clients so that I can practise and learn the whole process of working the a client. I think it will be a great learning experience, to tackle any problems that may arise - and see how I can handle the workload of different briefs going at the same time. It will give me some learning experience before I start to do more freelance work after university. It will also be different to other briefs, having a continuous crits and feedback, along with following a brief made by them. I hope I can follow their brief and try and exceed my services to push the outcome even further.

For my research brief I want to delve into a project that is something that I don’t fully know or understand. This will allow me to form more extensive research to answer my chosen subject matter. Last year I created work that was based around personal experiences, this time I would like to design something that is relatable to all people - but with an informative purpose. I will start this project after Christmas to allow me time to focus on both COP and EP separately.

I will also enter competition briefs to immerse myself in the opportunity, being the last time I can enter as a student. Two briefs that I know I will enter are, The Penguin Book Cover competition and Secret 7. I again would like to approach these projects very experimentally thinking outside of the box with design processes.

Overall, I want to keep my style of design towards each of my future projects open, and use my research to fully justify design decisions that are made. I will be using a majority of these outcomes for my design website and portfolio, so documenting my in depth development and thought process will be something I would like to do to add to my portfolio.
