Notes taken from 'About Judges' section helps identify what they are looking for to help inform initial design idea sand directions that are made.
Notes taken from researching into what makes a good book, one interview being with Suzanne herself.
- Making something that links to the context of the book
- something that is unique
- physically designing work is a always something appreciated.
- a colour scheme to work with forms a strong outcome
- show essence of the book
- vibrancy catches your eyes.
SUZANNE DEANS BOOKS
Suzanne Dean is the main judge of the Haruki Murakami brief and was responsible for the new
rebrand of his series with penguin books.
Her approach to book cover design is very experimental and goes above and beyond when necessary. Key aspects to implement into the book design from Dean’s work is that it would be clean, eye catching, hands on, and “extraordinary”.
An interview with Suzanne Dean on ‘The secret to a good book cover’ is that the cover should offer an interpretation of the books context, and goes to reinforce how a more hands on approach to a book cover will pay off a lot better.

Her work highlights how experimental one should be when approaching book design, offering an element of uniqueness in every book design that she has made.
BOOKS AT WATERST
Went to Waterstones to buy the book to read and gain a better understanding of the book and the narrative and characters to draw upon initial ideas
Went to Waterstones to buy the book to read and gain a better understanding of the book and the narrative and characters to draw upon initial ideas
Looked into the series of book covers that Suzanne made for the Murakami collection:
- Red black and white theme to form consistent style
- There is a focal point int he centre of the book
- Type is simplistic serif type, easy to read and Murakami's name is enlarged.
Looking at how Deans books stand out from the shelf - the simplicity of the design makes it move eye catching in comparison to the other books with rather busy compositions - so forming a book that is simplistic is something I want to do.
This book design was really interesting and incorporated an interactive element into it - which was a cool concept to potentially use.
NORWEGIAN WOOD FILM NOTES - Looking at key scenes or symbolism in the book.

- Friend commits suicide in CO2 car
- Tokyo
- In school
- Only been with one girl - very intimate recluse person
- Stays up late reading
- Naoko has long hair and fringe
- every Sunday they walked with no destination
- gift he gave on her birthday
- Midori - short haired talkative sunglasses red hair clip
- Her Mum died, sister with fiancé father in Uruguay

BOOKS AT THE TRAIN STATION
Waiting for my train I spotted some interesting books at the station and looked at the relationship or the front, spine and back cover of books that caught my eye. Was a great way to see the ways in which the design is carried out throughout the book jacket. What elements are shown throughout the jacket and what isn't. Helps get a better understanding of what is and isn't needed in all the different aspects.
Book One Hands made Tale:
All have an element of red to keep a consistent theme in colour schemes.
Book Two Grimm Tales:
Really love the cut up paper sculpture made for this design, and how it is shown on the back cover as well using negative white space to merge the book sculpture. The spine is more unique out of the back and front colour, but echoes the traditional penguin book spine design.
Book Three Stephen Hawking:
Clever way of incorporating black hole into the design and having it show on the back of the book design as well. Using the black as negative space to place quotes reviews.

BOOKS ANALYSIS RESEARCH
Deep analysis discussed among the group about he deeper meanings of the book, great way for me to have developed a better understanding of the book which will help inform initial book concepts.
Photos of books that I thought caught my eye looking at the relationship between type and imagery and composition and ratio of each element. Books with just type were striking, however this would lose the deeper meaning about the book. The tracing paper effect on the middle image book is a great way of forming depth and layering. 'Lost Japan' brings the idea of adding Japanese context to the book design to like to the book setting.
During my placement one of my colleagues had a book on Japanese Family emblems and I looked up the different characters house names to see if I could possibly use this in initial concepts.
EXISTING BOOK COVER ANALYSIS
- Uses imagery of trees to relate to the meadow in which the two main characters meet throughout the book

- photo of woman placed well forms sensuality, and the woman's gaze similar to last book.
- Almost placing reader it Toru's point of view - linking to first person writing.
- Not keen on the typeface used for the title, but the window frame forms a level for the type
- Orange of type stands out over the rest of the monochrome design.
- Suzanne Deans book design
- Simplistic and striking with use of colour
- Clever illustration that symbolises both trees from the meadow scene and also three peoples legs facing away from each other - linking to the many people that leave Toru
