The production of the outcome involved hand cutting and assembling the 3D design, creating the design physically instead of digitally created a stronger depth of field, and stronger shadow casts. The outcome was stuck together using foam stickers, to create a structure that allowed even composition of each layer.
There was the option of having the designs laser cut, but I felt having imagery that was cut too cleanly and detailed will take away from the authentic feel that I wanted it to have, and if too perfect the design wouldn't look as if it were cut out.
Photos were taken of the final outcome using a Canon DSLR for high quality. The strongest images used were separated until I was happy with the leave of detail of the photos to be used as the final outcome of the book cover. then be used for the final cover, the process of photography allowed for experimentation with lighting and shadows in natural light.
Initial composition design looks at having different elements of the collage shown and used on the book design. Midori on the spine and The meadow scene on the back. This was inspired by research of the composition of the Grimm Tales book. However I thought that the use of these images on their own wouldn't offer the same effect of the 3d design so this idea was scrapped.
I wanted to keep the books jacked really sleek and simple, so that all the detail will be on the front cover. The type used was Berlin Bold, has a softer and rounder approach to that of Futura, and makes the design look updated and modern.
