Initial sketches explore possible concepts that represent being a British Asian:
Telling a story - telling the story of my grandmothers and their journey to Britain, or the story of my mother being a British Asian in Birmingham (linking to venue of the festival). This narrative could be designed in an experimental way, i.e. a wall handing or potentially through a Sari (traditional Indian attire). Most initial concepts derive from own personal experiences and memories, so looking back on certain moments and events helped inspire these concepts.
CoNomical concept - Play on the comical design approach to form a strong connection with spectators through relatability. The could be done by portraying the stereotypical gossiping auntie, or British asian habits all families do. After discussing ideas with friends and family, the most relatable concept was the idea based around ‘Where are you really from?” it resonated well with all of them, and highlighted how it reaches out to a larger audience.
Initial sketches and meanings:
1) A wall piece that comments on my grandmothers journey and integrating and hardships faced
2) Sari Piece - a narrative screen printed on a sari to form a deeper message
3) Quality Street - plays with the funny idea of lack of trust when younger opening a box of chocolates to find
rice inside
4) Birth Certificate - straight tot he point and dry humour to say that we were born in Britain and we are from
Britain.
5) Unfair and Lovely - development of campaign for colourism
6) No but where are you really from? - clean and simple poster with large type and comical annoyed expression.
7) That's the Chai - play on saying 'and thats the tea' (gossip) Aunties are stereotypically known for gossiping
8) A silhouetted of me with all the phrases I have heard from growing up that was racist.
Potential comic idea that plays of representing the awkward situation of being asked where are you from in a really funny way to show the transition of being as where are you really from twice.

Top three sketches are the chosen and ideas that I think strongly worked well with this brief - From sketched to the rough digital design approached, they look at how they can simply look - this will help to explain in my crit. During my crit I was able to find out the poster design using me would be the funniest approach and add to the 'Identity' brief. I will take this poster design even further with development.
