OUGD404 Module Evaluation

AMRITHA VADI OUGD404 MODULE EVALUATION – av263964

Overall, I have learnt a great deal about Colour Theory and the use of a Grid Systems. The knowledge that I learnt from this module really helped shape my work in other projects when theories were applied.

The Final Outcomes that I created allowed me to experiment with different design styles, and created work through different methods:

The Penguin Books allowed me to combine my knowledge of colour, grid systems and narrative to create a 3 series of books that encapsulated the characters and key aspects of the book into a book cover. When applying the Marber Grid to my Penguin Books, I was able to identify that when applying a grid system, consistency in deliverables are shown. This project also helped bring attention to the use of colour, where I explored the themes colours connote, and how they can be applied to create a sense of relation to the narrative of the book.

The A1 Poster allowed me to look at designing posters with new forms of media, and also explore the principles of paper when applying design. It also allowed me to explore design subjectively, following David Carson’s approach to breaking the grid system.

The Colour Theory book allowed me to experiment with my new found book binding skills, to create a unique concertina book. Also the content inside the book showcases my extended knowledge on colour. I was able to identify the difference between CMYK and RGB, and the major role it plays in designing and printing work digitally. I was also able to further explore colour and look at the representation of colour internationally, and then representation of colours inspired from ‘Homage to the sqaure’.

Overall I am pleased with the extensive research I have under gone, I was able to explore both using and breaking the grid, and further my understanding to the use of colour. I was also able to revisit my Film Studies knowledge when analyzing the use of colour in film. Although I was able to complete the work and understand the briefs given, I feel like the overall Module was poorly led. For the projects of this Module, there were no form of crits or feedback given, this made it hard to critically reflect on the work that I had created. Projects such as the Penguin books lacked structure, and was set as an over the holidays task, resulting in my outcome to be my first and final approach, lacking development (as no feedback was given). The whole module was poorly led, with a lack of guidance. The structure of it all was very confusing, as our original tutor abruptly left the university, and then there was a huge time gap where Design Principles was not being taught. Fred was able to support us towards the end, however we were only given 3 lessons to finish the module following the curriculum, after a 3-month pause on the module. I feel that my work could have been a lot more confident with the consistent presence of a tutor for this module. If I were to have the opportunity to approach this module again, I would want to develop a better understanding for the production process of the work created, to have a better understanding for material choices for deliverables, if they were to be produced.
