Three Classic Penguin Books

When choosing my three books, I wanted to look at re-creating three classics that I knew well, This would allow me to have a more confident approach to the brief, by having an understanding for the plot and the characters.

The Jungle Book Notes

Abandoned after an accident, baby Mowgli is taken and raised by a family of wolves. As the boy grows older, the wise panther Bagheera realizes he must be returned to his own kind in the nearby man-village. Baloo the bear however thinks differently taking the young Mowgli under his wing and teaching that living in the jungle is the best life there is. Bagheera realizes that Mowgli is in danger, particularly from Shere Khan the tiger who hates all people. When Baloo finally comes around, Mowgli runs off into the jungle where he survives a second encounter with Kaa the snake and finally, with Shere Khan. It's the sight of a pretty girl however that gets Mowgli to go the nearby man-village.
  • Many of the books were created to visualize key characters from the book, manly Mowgli and Shere Khan
  • Incorporated the colour orange - possibly to represent the tiger, or keep original classic colour of the Penguin books
  • The tiger is the most prominently used colour, or the combination of Mowgli and Baloo - the representation of adversity and friendship.
The Phantom of the Opera Notes

Deformed since birth, a bitter man known only as the Phantom lives in the sewers underneath the Paris Opera House. He falls in love with the obscure chorus singer Christine, and privately tutors her while terrorizing the rest of the opera house and demanding Christine be given lead roles. Things get worse when Christine meets back up with her childhood acquaintance Raoul and the two fall in love. The Phantom decides to kidnap her and imprison her with him in his lair. Raoul is now the only one who can stop him.
  • Main focus is on the Phantom (aka Eric), and him masking himself away
  • could look at the love phantom has for Christine
  • The meeting at the two way mirror
  • The chandelier - the theatre
The Great Gatsby

Midwest native Nick Carraway arrives in 1922 New York in search of the American dream. Nick, a would-be writer, moves in next-door to millionaire Jay Gatsby and across the bay from his cousin Daisy and her philandering husband, Tom (Joel Edgerton). Thus, Nick becomes drawn into the captivating world of the wealthy and -- as he bears witness to their illusions and deceits -- pens a tale of impossible love, dreams, and tragedy.
  • Focus on Jay and his rich lifestyle
  • The romance between Jay and Daisy
